WWW:http://www.ofbjp.org BJP's Website: http://www.bjp.org Title: Dual citizenship for NRIs under study Author: PTI Publication: Deccan Herald Date: May 18, 2000 The issue of granting dual citizenship to NRIs and persons of Indian Origin is under the consideration of the government for quite some time and a decision on this could not be taken as various aspects needed to be thoroughly examined, External Affairs minister Jaswant Singh told the Lok Sabha today. Replying to a question in the House, the minister said the government had already granted various facilities to NRIs and persons of Indian origin to facilitate their interface with the country of their origin. But as far as granting dual citizenship was concerned, the matter needs to be fully examined, he said. He said the office of the chief commissioner (non-resident Indian) has been transferred from the jurisdiction of the ministry of finance to the ministry of external affairs to deal with issues relating to NRIs. This new arrangement would formulate appropriate policies for deepening linkages with all NRIs and overseas Indians for encouraging their participation in the development of the country in various fields including investment, education, culture, science and technology. It would also act as an interface between the organisations and associations of overseas Indians abroad and the Government of India, he said.
