Accusing Catholic leaders of "issuing irresponsible statements which create fear and tension between different communities", the organisation's president R L Francis urged them to engage themselves in constructive activities instead of "indulging in worthless talk." Some members of the little known Islamic Deendar sect were arrested in connection with the explosions that rocked several churches in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa. Francis also took exception to the Christian leaders' criticism of John Joseph, the only Christian member in the National Commission for Minorities. "Joseph has done commendable work for developing mutual understanding between churches and Hindu organisations and it was only because of his efforts that Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal agreed for a dialogue with Church leaders," Francis said in a statement here. Christian leaders did not participate in the July 11 meeting demanding that the ambit of Hindu representation in the talks be widened. PTI
