Title: Pak is irresponsible and betrayer: BJP Author: Narendra Modi Pubication: BJP Website Date: July 8, 1999 Statement issued by Shri Narendra Modi, General Secretary, BJP July 8, 1999 By failing to honour its commitment to restore the sanctity of the Line of Control by withdrawing its forces, made in the Clinton-Sharif joint statement, Pakistan stands exposed as an incredible state - a state that cannot be believed. Starting from 1947, Pakistan has reneged on each and every commitment it has made in bilateral agreements with India. Now, it has shown scant regard for a commitment made to the US and the UK. In order to back track from the commitment it made in the Clinton-Sharif joint statement, Pakistan is seeking to link Kargil with non-issues. The true face of Pakistan will now be known to the international community: Its commitments are incredible and its actions are irresponsible. On the other hand, India has honoured each bilateral commitment and accord and behaved in a responsible and credible manner. India has steadfastly refused, and continues to refuse, any third party mediation or intervention - a stand that has now been accepted by the international community. Our diplomatic success is in sharp contrast to Pakistan's international isolation. But we cannot expect any better from Pakistan, a state that does not even accept the bodies of its soldiers killed in Kargil. A state that has such a low level of commitment to its own people, more so its soldiers, cannot be expected to be credible or responsible. That is why we had merely taken "note" of the Clinton-Sharif joint statement. Given this situation, India is perfectly justified in militarily evicting the Pakistani intruders. The Vajpayee Government is firm in its resolve that the Indian forces will not rest till the intruders have been removed - dead or alive. The Chief Ministers who attended Wednesday's conference have associated themselves with the Government's Kargil action and have rightly said that the nation stands as one in its resolve to remove the intruders. This is our primary objective and we shall achieve it without any third party intervention or mediation. With the majority of the Chief Ministers not favouring a session of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), the Congress stands further isolated and totally distanced from national opinion and sentiments. The Congress, more so its president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, unfortunately, continue to refuse to accept that the immediate national task is to remove the Pakistani intruders. For Mrs Sonia Gandhi and her party, the immediate task seems to be to make cheap political capital out of a national crisis on which all Indians, barring she and her colleagues, are united.
