In a clear gesture of solidarity with India as during the Kargil conflict, Clinton, according to government sources, extended his support and conveyed a willingness ``to do everything possible to contain such activities''. Clinton appreciated Vajpayee's ``positive response'' to the ceasefire offer by the Hizbul Mujahideen. The PM pointed out that every time India had taken an initiative for peace Pakistan had responded by inciting brutal terrorist acts. In this context he referred to the Kargil intrusion after his bold effort to achieve peace and normalisation of relations with Pakistan by undertaking the bus journey to Lahore. Vajpayee referred to the massacre of Sikhs in Chittisinghpura during Clinton's visit to India in March. He told Clinton that the people in this country were wondering how long restraint could be exercised in the face of such outrages. Vajpayee expressed his doubt about the purpose of further talks with Pakistan under such circumstances. There is no basis for a meaningful dialogue, he said. However, the peace process in Jammu & Kashmir would continue, he added. Clinton said he looked forward to Vajpayee's visit to the US. Clinton's open sympathy and support for India is clearly a reflection of the increasing realisation in Washington that Pak-sponsored terrorism was holding to ransom the peace process on the sub-continent.
