>>>New Delhi/Chandigarh, August 19“Building bridges of understanding between a strong NRI community and the US authorities on one hand and the Indian government on the other would be my first and foremost endeavour,” says Mr Bhishma K. Agnihotri, who is tipped to be India’s ever Ambassador-at-large. He has been asked by the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, to “come over to India” in the coming week to discuss modalities of his new assignment.“So far I have no official communication about my appointment. But I hope to get a formal communication before I leave for India later this week,” said Mr Agnihotri, presently working as Chancellor, Southern University Law Center, Baton Rouge in the USA, in a telephonic interview with The Tribune .His appointment assumes importance in the light of Mr Vajpayee’s forthcoming visit to the USA to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York in the last week of September.“My effort would be to initiate a two-way traffic with focus on the NRIs. This would consolidate a new Indo-US relationship foundation. The NRIs have the resources. We would help the existing diplomatic network and supplement Indian embassy in Washington. I am confident there would be no clash or conflict of interests but would rather work as a team,” he said......

>>>Narendra Modi is General secretary of the BJ and a prominent media personality delineating on matters BJP. Known for his extraordinary organisational acumen and keen political brain, Mr Modi talks Sify.com on a roadmap towards the India of his dreams on the occasion of the 55th Independence Day.The 55th Independence has arrived and in the natural course of things it is an occasion to look back and take stock of the years that have gone by for India as a nation. Along with Indian independence came partition as well. It is an unfortunate fact that the factors, which led to the partition of our motherland, has still not been exorcised and unfortunately permeates the body politic of the nation. In so many years of the polity of India since independence we have been able to prove the wrong premise that the partition was undertaken. However, the fact of the matter is that our neighbour has persisted in its effort to support cross-border terrorism. Not only that our neighbour is increasingly creating conditions to encourage cross-border terrorism. This has grave implications for the nation’s internal security and the well being and safety of our citizens. We have given to ourselves a remarkable Constitution, we have striven in the last fifty years to provide the rule of law and justice to the most deprived and the downtrodden......
- [BJP News]: I am confident of UP BJAdvani
- TIMES NEWS NETWORK - Times of India - Posted on
>>>UCKNOW: Union home minister L K Advani on Saturday patted the BJP workers for staying with the party through thick and thin and pursuing politics purely on moralistic grounds in spite of heavy odds.Addressing the partymen at the Saraswati Sishu Mandir, Nirala Nagar, Advani admitted that he was concerned at the affairs of the party barely six-eight months, before but now improvement was visible at every level. He said the BJP earned a niche for itself working tirelessly among the toiling masses without giving any thought to power and pelf.In course of his 40-minute speech, the home minister repeatedly attacked political parties for pursuing sectoral politics, keeping national interests at bay. He said he was stunned at the way projections were being made in the media about the poor electoral prospects of the BJP in the coming elections. The BJP was, he said, still far ahead of others and this would be conclusively proved at the time of the polls. In an obvious reference to the Congress and its dynastic style of politics, the home minister said that although the party had a number of competent and experienced leaders, none could be considered for the highest slot as long as the members of a particular family were available. Then without naming any one he said that there were parties which were governed by a family or a woman in Uttar Pradesh. These parties, he said, did not see much swing in their support bases because they played the politics of vote-bank. He said there was a time when people would call the BJP a party of Brahmins. But the party had proved it that it always stood for the nation and national interests, he said adding, that in the name of social justice, no one should be allowed to sow the seeds of mistrust in the society......

- [BJP News]: RSS row irrelevant: Agnihotri
- K G Suresh - The Hindustan Times - Posted on
>>>THE NEWLY-APPOINTED adviser to the Indian embassy in Washington, Bhisham K Agnihotri, on Wednesday termed as "unfortunate and irrelevant" the linking of his appointment with his RSS background but asserted that he was proud of his association with the Sangh. The only Indian to head an American law school, Agnihotri, who has also been made ambassador-at-large for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and People of Indian Origin (PIO), said he did not anticipate any problem in working with Indian ambassador to US Lalit Mansingh. "We are working for the same cause. There should be no problem," the 68-year-old former additional district judge of Delhi, whose appointment has come in for criticism due to his close links with the Overseas Friends of BJP, said. Agnihotri said his main task was to help in building bridges between NRIs and India and NRIs across the globe, besides trying to make NRIs a powerful block in their respective countries. "My first priority is to ensure the success of Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's coming visit to New York," he said. .....

>>>We became prisoners of our own sharafat. He came and badmouthed everything about us. Kargil, Mukti Bahini, Sushma, Freedom Struggle, Jihad. Then he played smart on home turf. His Excellencies and His Excellencies! Every one was counted during his thanksgiving service, from Manbir Singh to the ADCs. Except one. And everybody knew who he was. What great diplomacy did the General play! So he said everyone was falling in line, Kashmir, yes, Kashmir, His Excellency Jaswant Singh, Vajpayee Saheb, they were all very nice guys. Very understanding. But someone did play something and he had to return home midnight. Khali haath! The nation wanted to know from Mr Vajpayee what happened during those long six hours of one-to-ones. What was being negotiated that made him nostalgic in Islamabad?Earlier Vajpayee-speak in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha was dull and almost monotonous because he read the statement. This time he spoke to the nation, and he spoke out well. I‚m sure by this time he felt the pulse of the nation.People were getting uneasy over the arrogant General‚s charade-talk and the seemingly silence of the lamb-like diplomat-stalwarts. ŒŒHow many certificates of good conduct would you like to collect, Sir?‚‚ people were asking. This deadly hobby, history tells us, always ends up with some Kargil or worse, a Pervez! You may give him Taj Mahal, but he loves to shoot bullets......
- [BJP News]: US ready to end sanctions on India to build an alliance
- Jane Perlez - Not Known - Posted on
>>>WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 - The Bush administration is moving on a broad front to strengthen relations with India, a nation it views as a neglected and potentially important strategic ally and trading partner in Asia. The most dramatic step the administration will take, officials say, is the almost certain lifting of American economic and military sanctions imposed on India in 1998 for its test of a nuclear weapon.Senior administration officials say Congress will be asked to lift the sanctions when it returns next month. Some of the most senior legislators, including the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Joseph R. Biden Jr., Democrat of Delaware, favor the move.Senator Biden said in an interview that he had sent a letter to President Bush last week expressing his support and indicating that the sanctions could be removed in time for a possible meeting between Mr. Bush and Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, in New York in late September. Mr. Bush is also planning a visit to India early next year. The sanctions were symbolic as much as practical, the officials said. Lifting them now would remove a significant irritant to closer ties. But it would also signal that the United States - after being surprised and chagrined by India's nuclear test three years ago - had little choice but to.....
- [BJP News]: US seeks to lift sanctions on India
- Alan Sipress - Washington Post - Posted on
>>>The Bush administration will start working with Congress next month to lift sanctions placed on India after its 1998 nuclear tests, clearing the way for greater military planning, joint operations and eventual sharing of weapons technology with New Delhi. Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage said State Department officials have held preliminary talks with Capitol Hill and will move forward "at a speed visible to the naked eye" in easing sanctions once Congress returns from summer recess. The move is aimed at strengthening ties between the world's two largest democracies and would accelerate their evolving military cooperation in various areas, including joint exercises, officer exchanges, and coordinated efforts to combat piracy and protect navigation through the crucial sea lanes of the Indian Ocean. The two countries are already cooperating in planning for peacekeeping operations. "It would give us a wider range of flexibility in moving forward in these areas," said Adm. Dennis C. Blair, commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Command, which covers India. This cooperation is expected to get a major boost late this year when the two sides resume high-level discussions over defense policy and joint operations. "You've seen some seeds sprouting. With the [upcoming discussions], we now have a way forward with these activities," Blair said. American military and diplomatic officials point to the benefits of improving often-strained relations with India because it is a major regional power with a professional army increasingly led by Western-oriented commanders. Though U.S. officials won't say so, some experts outside the government stress that Washington is also looking to beef up these military ties with an eye on China, seen by some U.S. strategic planners as posing a mounting challenge to American interests in Asia. .....

- Tarun Basu - Rediff - Posted on
>>>Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has lauded the 20-million strong Indian diaspora's efforts in promoting a better understanding of the country abroad and pledged his eternal support for the community. On the eve of Independence day, Vajpayee said that by their sheer energy, enterprise and achievements, Indians overseas have enhanced the country's image and promoted keener appreciation of its concerns."This was most graphically demonstrated after our nuclear tests in Pokhran in 1998, when the people of Indian origin abroad were able to project to the countries of their domicile the security concerns and geo-strategic considerations which led India to this step," Vajpayee said in an interview. In a bid to illustrate his commitment to addressing all issues concerning the diaspora, Vajpayee said his government had set up a high-level committee under LM Singhvi, Member of Parliament and a former high commissioner to Britain, to look at all issues concerning non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin."It is for the first time since our independence that we are seriously engaging the Indian diaspora to develop such mutually beneficial linkages," he said......
