Title: BJP slogan: Tried, tested and trusted Author: Asian Age reporter Publication: Asian Age Date: August 5, 1999 New Delhi: "Tried, Tested and Trusted," is the theme song of the BJP for the coming Lok Sabha elections, centring around the 13-month rule of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Huge posters of Mr Vajpayee addressing rallies have been put up in the media briefing room of the party with this slogan. The party has already decided to project Mr Vajpayee as the "Pride of India," having made the nation proud on all fronts, including the military and diplomatic victory on Kargil, the economic boom and social harmony. A suggestion has also been made to pledge a "proud and prosperous India" on the cover of the national agenda for governance document which will be released by the Prime Minister on August 16. The thrust of the campaign will be on Mr Vajpayee and his "able, proven, tested, and accepted leadership." "The focus of the campaign would be on him (Mr Vajpayee) and his stature as the only leader with charisma," a senior party leader said after a meeting of the party's campaign committee chaired by Union home minister L.K. Advani. Mr Vajpayee will launch the BJP's election campaign from Ludhiana on August 7 with Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal and on the same day Mr Advani too will kick off the canvassing from Himachal Pradesh. Party spokesman Venkaiah Naidu told reporters here on Wednesday that Mr Vajpayee will address an election meeting in New Delhi on August 8 and Mr Advani would campaign in Pune the same day. The Prime Minister will begin the second leg of his tours after filing his nomination papers from Lucknow where he is seeking re-election. Wednesday's campaign committee meeting discussed the party's election strategy and decided to focus on the Prime Minister's leadership and the achievements of the government. Senior leaders who attended the meeting included party president Kushabhau Thakre, information and broadcasting minister Pramod Mahajan and external affairs minister Jaswant Singh.
